Picture Story 2

The Lucky Ones

On a warm summer's day as I lay in bed waiting to get up, I could hear a rumbling noise. The dog was playing in the backyard, she started to bark and run up and down the flower beds. I raced into the garden and looked up at the mountain. I noticed other people outside their homes too. We were shocked to see Vesuvius smoking.
The rumbling turned into a roar, smoke and ashes spat out of the cone and there was a strange smell in the air. Everyone was panicing, Vesuvius was about to erupt. Nobody had seen this before. What do we do? Where do we go? Mum and dad raced around the house collecting a few things we might need. I grabbed my stone pebbles, knuckles and wooden figures.
Larva started to spurt out of the top of the volcano. People were everywhere. Quickly my family and I ran down to the sea front where dad had his fishing boat. As we sailed away I looked back at my village, larva was pouring down the hillside into our town......as I cried I thought..... we are the lucky ones.
